Just a few videos I have found on youtube which relate or semi-related to science and are awesome…

The Sprint Missile was part of the “Safeguard” anti-ballistic missile system which was in service briefly in the 1970’s in the US. It was designed as the last line of defense for incoming missiles and as such it had to be fast; EXTREMELY fast. So fast that the missiles nose would actually become enveloped in plasma from the friction of going hypersonic in the atmosphere. This film shows a test launch. And no, it’s not sped up. That’s how fast it was:

In 1984 Nasa conducted a test which involved the intentional crashing of a remote controled 707, filled with dummies and instruments such as cameras. The test was designed to evaluate new fuel additives and safety measures for passenger planes. The actual event did not go off as planned, because the plane crashed on an angle, as opposed to directly down the designated path. But a great deal of good data was gained none the less.

The C-130 is one amazing workhorse of an airplane. It is the largest aircraft to land and take off on a carrier. Not surprisingly, the Navy decided against doing this on a regular baisis, despite successful tests. But damn, that’s a big plane to land on a ship…

Now this is what I call a BIG Tesla coil. I’d love to meet the guy who built it… and see it in person too!

This guy was just rolling some video when a lightning bolt struck. REALLY CLOSE:

Transformers are those big things on utility polls and in substations that adjust the voltage of electricity for transmission and use. They’re usually full of oil which helps insulate the electrical components and keep them from overheating. But when a transformer shorts out it can sometimes end up with a very dramatic explosion when the head causes the oil to ignite! Here are a couple of videos:

Here are some substation switches that aren’t supposed to be opened under load. This is what happens when they are:

Depth Charges produce huge concussions underwater and are often used as anti-submarine weapons. Water transmits shock waves much more efficiently than air. Here’s a test of a large depth charge. This video had been posted before as a “nuclear” explosion. It’s not. This is just a regular conventional explosive depth charge,

Okay, that’s it for now… but it’s not like there are a shortage of amazingly awesome science videos out there. I could keep going if I wanted.
