OOPS: That looks like a.. um..

A barracks/apartment complex stood at a Navy Base in California since the 1960’s. Then along came Google Earth and… uh oh!

It turns out that the shape of the building bares an uncanny resemblance to a swastika, the symbol most commonly associated with the Hitler’s Nazi Party and all the atrocities they committed. Of course, the swastika predates that episode of history by some time and has been used by many cultures as everything from a good luck charm to a religious symbol.  But since the Second World War, it’s primarily associated with the Nazis.  Thus, it seems like it might not be the kind of image the US Navy wants to be associated with.

The buildings had been in this shape for a good four decades and nobody noticed, as it is not obvious from the ground.   Of course, there’s no evidence that it was built to look like a swastika on purpose and the shape actually does have some advantages.   The shape of the building gives four wings, each with it’s own nice sheltered courtyard, open on one side.   It also affords plenty of light and window space for all the rooms in the building by maximizing the outer wall area.

But as one might imagine, more than a few groups have gotten in on the action.  First a radio talk show host contacted the navy and then the anti-defamation league became involved.   So now the US Navy has decided to modify the building, thus obscuring the horrible and offensive shape forever, so that no aircraft or satellite need have to gaze on it.   It will cost an estimated $600,000 of tax payer money (enough to uparmor a few Humvees or buy a few dozen of the best body armor vests for soldiers).    But thankfully, nobody will again mistake the US Navy for the German U-Boat Service.

In a related story:  A prop-driven aircraft was forced to make a belly landing.   This seems to have caused all four of the prop blades to become bent at the ends.   Needless to say, there’s going to be a federal hate-crime investigation about this.

When you zoom a bit further out, the 2 buildings to the left (west?) look strikingly like the outlines of bombers and the empty field to the right looks somewhat cratered. I wonder if that was the original symbolic intent, to show that we bombed the heck out of the nazis, or if its just a bigger coincidence?

Any way to verify this? Does any one have coordinates of the building to check or any other way to verify it?
