Morgellons: A disease that doesn’t exist

April 10th, 2009

Share

Morgellons is an condition which is claimed to produce symptoms including: skin soreness and small skin ulcers, a feeling that bugs are crawling under one’s skin (although evidence  actual insects or parasites has not been produced), soreness and fatigue and the production of fibers which either can be found under the skin or extruding out from the skin.

The name for the condition (and quite possibly the condition itself) was invented by a single person:  Mary Leitao.   In 2001, Leitao claims that her two year old son complained of “bugs” under his skin and had irritation that no doctor was able to diagnose to the satisfaction of Leitao.

Via Wikipedia:

In 2001, according to Mary Leitao, her then two-year-old son developed sores under his lip and began to complain of “bugs.” Leitao, who graduated with a BS in Biology, and worked for five years at Boston hospitals as a lab technician before becoming a stay-at-home mother, says she examined the sores with her son’s toy microscope and discovered red, blue, black, and white fibers. She states that she took her son to see at least eight different doctors who were unable to find any disease, allergy, or anything unusual about her son’s described symptoms. Dr. Fred Heldrich, a Johns Hopkins pediatrician with a reputation “for solving mystery cases,” examined Leitao’s son.  Heldrich found nothing abnormal about the boy’s skin, wrote to the referring physician that “Leitao would benefit from a psychiatric evaluation and support,” and registered his worry about Leitao’s “use” of her son.  Psychology Today reports that Leitao last consulted an unnamed Johns Hopkins infectious disease specialist who after reviewing her son’s records refused to see him, suggesting Leitao herself might suffer from “Munchausen’s by proxy, a psychiatric syndrome in which a parent pretends a child is sick or makes him sick to get attention from the medical system.”  This opinion of a potential psychological disorder, according to Leitao, was shared by several medical professionals she sought out:

“(Leitao) said she long ago grew accustomed to being doubted by doctors whenever she sought help for her son, who is now 7 and still suffering from recurring lesions. ‘They suggested that maybe I was neurotic,’ Leitao said, ‘They said they were not interested in seeing him because I had Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.’”

Leitao says that her son developed more sores, and more fibers continued to poke out of them.   She and her husband, Edward Leitao, an internist with South Allegheny Internal Medicine in Pennsylvania, felt their son suffered from “something unknown.” She chose the name Morgellons disease (with a hard g) from a description of an illness in the monograph A Letter to a Friend by Sir Thomas Browne, in 1690, wherein Browne describes several medical conditions in his experience, including “that endemial distemper of children in Languedoc, called the morgellons, wherein they critically break out with harsh hairs on their backs.” There is no suggestion that the symptoms described by Browne are linked to the putative modern cases.

Since 2001, the “disease” has become something of a cottage industry.  With the internet and conspiracy theories going wild, the alleged condition has been linked to chemtrails, electromagnetic fields, genetically modified foods, big corporations and a government conspiracy.  The fact that the WHO, CDC and every other organization that has looked into the disease has found no evidence that it exists is used as proof of the conspiracy.

A few observations:

1.  Morgellons appears to be entirely consistant with a very well known psychiatric condition:  Delusional parasitosis.   It is the belief that one’s body has become contaminated with parasties and has been associated with general paranoya and delusions.   It seems that humans are especially prone to manifesting fears into beliefs that they are being invaded by insects, infectious agents or both.

2.  Skin irritation and ulcers appears to be consistant with people picking at their skin, which they might do if they believed something was under it.

3.  We’re surrounded by fibers.  If you open up your skin by picking at it, fibers will likely get into it.   These might include human hair, animal hairs, plant material, cotton, polyester and any number of other materials.

4.   The “evidence” of the disease producing physical changes has been limited to things like increased inflammation, blood pressure, antibodies and other minor effects easily attributable to psychosomatic causes.

Despite claims that the fibers are unusual or beyond anything that has been seen, nobody has produced any clear scientific evidence or analysis of the fibers that demonstrates them to be anything other than very mundane and explainable fibers.   The best they seem to offer is that some labs can’t identify them – which is not surprising given the variety of fibers in the world.   Also, despite claims that the fibers can be found under unbroken skin, there is no documented evidence that conclusively shows that the skin was not previously scraped or otherwise broken in a manner that would introduce fibers.   It is also worth noting that the body can produce it’s own fibers (hair) and hairs can become ingrown.

Some have claimed to be cured by things like homeopathy, which might make sense, since the cure and the disease are both pretend.   Others claim it is bacterial in nature and thus recommend pumping the antibiotics.   It does appear that people can be cured of the disease, but only if they think they are.

I suggest Morgellons Watch for more info.

Personally, I’m very convinced that it does not exist.   If it ducks like a quack then it’s usually a quack and I’ve seen enough quackery in my day to notice that this smells bad a mile away.   Morgellons Watch is definately the site I’d recomend for more comprehensive information.

Silver supplements are old news and have been making the run for a long time. They go away and then pop up again every few years. This happened even before the internet. There is no reasonable debate on them. They are snakeoil and always were.

Silver is not toxic so if you drink them they won’t harm you, but won’t help you either. If you make a long term habit of drinking them though, then they can build up enough silver in your body to turn your skin gray blue and cause other problems for you.

Since they’re worthless there’s no point in using them to begin with.

If they have any value as topical antiseptics that doesn’t really matter because we have better topical antiseptics anyway, so why use one of these when other options do the job better and are safer.

Who wrote this? The CDC hasn’t even come out with their report yet. May 2009 is the scheduled release date. I don’t have Morgellons, but I believe it is real. It is being investigated by the CDC, but even if it wasn’t, we carry tons of bacteria on our skin all the time, we haven’t seen the half of what a combination of that bacteria plus a bug bite or cut combined with a steady diet of meat filled with steroids and fruit & veggies heavily sprayed with pesticides (and the steroids and pesticides keep changing because they keep harming us in new ways) can do to us. Doctors are trained to think within a box: symptoms, look in a book that only notes what has been discovered, see accompanying prescription, prescribe, good job, go home, feel like I’m someone.

I also do not trust the CDC. Half a million dollars for research? For one human, half a million means one house, one car, a few vacations, health insurance for a few years, and food for a few years. It’s a slap in the face.

Research at Oklahoma University and the Tulsa Crime Lab has proven that the fibers are not animal and not organic (meaning they do not match any known fibers), and here’s a kicker – the fiber, at 1600 degrees fahrenheit does not burn.

Don’t forget that people with syphilis were locked up in mental wards before it was discovered and before horrific experiments were performed on American Black men. Don’t forget how long it took to investigate HIV.

I would like to believe that doctors and researchers are in it for us, and some are, but sadly most are not and sadly the money for research follows pharmaceutical and health insurance providers. Morgellons will become a disease when there is enough money to be made from it. Until then, its sufferers live with diminished lives, commit suicide, and prefer isolation. How many other countless sufferers are there in hiding?

Swine flu has killed under twenty people that WHO confirms and it’s suddenly an epidemic. Have you seen their podcast about swine flu? According to their podcasts, the common cold, headaches, and sprains should also be at Level 5. WHO and the CDC are sick, sad jokes on us. We don’t know how many people are dying from Morgellons.

If you want to complain about half a million dollars being spent on one days worth of “research” and really dedicate your energy to that, then I suggest you start looking around at all the frivolous spending that far exceeds the cost of a house and using your energy for something productive.

I can’t believe you said the CDC already dismissed Morgellons. As of 4.30.09 there is no report. Look at the CDC web-site. Once a liar always a liar… tisktisk

Good luck to everyone with Morgellons. This is a true test of your ability to be pro-active with your health: document your symptoms, what you eat, what you wear, what supplements you take, what makes it flair up, what helps, what it feels like in heat, in the bath, and make adjustments. Help the detoxer you were born with – treat your liver well.

I didn’t say that they dismissed it. I said they found no evidence of it being anything real other than a mental illness. This continues to be the case. To date, the CDC has not found any evidence to support the existance of the condition. They do have a continuing study program, which I might add, has been blasted by many physicians who say it only adds credibility to what is obviously not real. The study comes at the behest of congressmen who were lobbied by their constituents. It’s a political thing.

Both the CDC and WHO have stated that they have not found any supporting evidence.

Don’t call me a liar when your here making outlandish claims about things you have little understanding of such as food quality and bacteria (most of which are harmless, some of which are beneficial and a very very few of which are harmful)

Because it lists it on a disease tree? It exists as a fictitious concept but not a real condition..

Anyway, with regards to the CDC, they’re not really doing a “Study” on the matter, but rather an “ongoing investigation” and the investigation is to establish whether it even exists, which they have not found any evidence of thus far.

A non-organic fiber that is supposedly produced by the human body or a paracite? That’s a bit..strange.. do you have any citation for this?

If this is for real, I have a suspicion I know what the magic fiber is.

I’m still waiting for the report on this magic unburning fiber that somehow gets under human skin. I can’t find the original report, but I googled some Tulsa Crime Lab and morgellons and found a couple reports of fibers that analysis found contained silica. I don’t know if its the same fiber as mentioned above.

I have a suspicion as to what this magic fiber is, and it’s not a magic animal or magic vegetable.

    NutraSilver® Kills MRSA Flesh-Eating SUPER-BUG

NutraSilver® is Proven To Kill MRSA Super-Bug in FDA-Certified Lab Tests!

According to the Mayo clinic “MRSA infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria — often called “staph.” MRSA stands for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. It’s a strain of staph that’s resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. MRSA can be fatal.”
NUTRASILVER® KILLED 1,339,999,000 (read BILLION) MRSA CELLS AT
THE RATE OF 99.9999% IN 60 SECONDS!

You’ve probably read the news reports that deaths from MRSA infections are now outpacing deaths from the AIDS virus, here in the U.S. and throughout the world.

That’s why doctors are so frightened. They know that MRSA infections – which were once confined to people with fresh surgical wounds under long-term hospital care – are now moving rapidly into the general population. And, anyone who comes into contact with groups of people on a regular basis – such as in supermarkets, churches, hospital rooms, business offices, gyms, or other places where people congregate – are susceptible.

Scientist world-wide have been fighting this bacterial infection for many years. The problem is that this bacteria mutates to become impervious to antibiotics. As new antibiotics are developed, the bacteria again mutates to resist the antibiotics. MRSA CAN NOT DEVELOP A RESISTANCE TO NutraSilver® so the problem apparently is resolved.

“Most MRSA infections occur in hospitals or other health care settings, such as nursing homes and dialysis centers. It’s known as health care-associated MRSA, or HA-MRSA. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at most risk of HA-MRSA. More recently, another type of MRSA has occurred among otherwise healthy people in the wider community. This form, community-associated MRSA, or CA-MRSA, is responsible for serious skin and soft tissue infections and for a serious form of pneumonia.”

“Staph skin infections, including MRSA, generally start as small red bumps that resemble pimples, boils or spider bites. These can quickly turn into deep, painful abscesses that require surgical draining. Sometimes the bacteria remain confined to the skin. But they can also penetrate into the body, causing potentially life-threatening infections in bones, joints, surgical wounds, the bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.”

NutraSilver® chose BioScience Laboratories in Bozeman, Montana to conduct FDA-certified time-kill in-vitro lab tests using NutraSilver® vs. MRSA 300.

Dr. Daryl S. Paulson, President and CEO, has extensive experience in skincare research designs, clinical trials, and biostatistics. He is the author of the standard texts of the industry — Topical Antimicrobial Testing and Evaluation, Applied Statistical Designs for the Researcher, and Handbook of Regression and Modeling: Applications for the Clinical and Pharmaceutical Industries — as well as the editor of the Handbook of Topical Antimicrobials: Industrial Applications in Consumer Products and Pharmaceuticals (Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Processing).

The results of the tests were astounding: NUTRASILVER® KILLED 1,339,999,000 (read BILLION) MRSA CELLS AT THE RATE OF 99.9999% IN 60 SECONDS! This time kill-rate far exceeded the time kill-rates of Hibiclens®.

Most microbes are not that difficult to kill when they’re not infecting a host organism. Alcohol is a fairly effective antiseptic that will kill most bacteria that are not in an endospore phase.

That doesn’t mean that an infection will be cured by getting drunk.

You can call it an “opinion” but it’s a judgement based on established facts and a large amount of research. There have been a few very well regarded institutions that have looked into this (Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinc, the CDC) and have all come to the conclusion that there is no evidence of its existence.

A very strong and important piece of evidence with this kind of thing is the fact that those who claim to have proven it exists or have found a cure or cause or something are entirely inconsistant. You have one guy who says it’s caused by chemical toxins and another by bacteria and another by fungus and another says it’s rf radiation. One says the fibers are organic and another inorganic. They can’t all be right! This is common in cases of bunk conditions. Since everyone makes up their own “facts” there is no coherant set of symptoms or data that everyone (or even most) agree on. That is a BIG red flag.

One of the most important things in showing this for what it is is that these symptoms are not new. People claim that they feel bugs or something crawling under their skin and feel compelled to pick at them, but upon examination there are clearly no “bugs” there. Is this a mystery? No, it’s a very common and well documented psychiatric condition that has been in the medical textbooks for many years.

Delusional parasitosis – it’s one of the more common delusional disorders. It often starts with someone who feels a tingle, itch or other sensation on their skin and attributes it to parasites. In other cases, it might develop from an OCD condition or some other kind of issue. Basically it’s a tactory hallucination of sorts.

The only “little bullet holes” in your skin are pores, hair follicles and sweat glands. The fact that you even use the term “little bullet hole” is striking in and of itself. If these become sore, it’s probably because you’ve been picking at them. I realize that you may not feel like you’re picking at them excessively, that you’re just scratching an itch or trying to get the debris or parasite out of them, but it does not help to do so. Look, if everyone picked and poked every little pimple or bump on their body, they’d have the same situation.

Please see a doctor – a psychiatrist, or if you don’t know one, go to your regular doctor and ask them for help in getting the correct treatment.

I’m not a professional, but I have to side with the medical and scientific establishment on this one. Anyone manifesting these symptoms is probably suffering from a real mental health condition and needs help. This is a text book case of an invented syndrome.

So very few of the Morgies understand the meaning of DOP. If they did, they would know that they aren’t just DOP, but are DOP by their own admission. Doctors can easily, and correctly, diagnose them as being delusional, just by hearing what they “believe” about their medical condition. They have diagnosed themselves.

    To the Morgie:

It’s not about your symptoms. It’s about what you “believe” about your experiences. Your beliefs are not only unshakable. They are also ridiculous, totally unfounded, and untrue. It’s your beliefs, and beliefs alone, that determine whether or not you are DOP.

If you would treat the “mental” disorders, which are obvious to everyone but you, and stay on the medication your doctors prescribe, they wouldn’t have a problem looking into any secondary “physical” problems you may have. Most of you would learn that your physical problems aren’t nearly as bad as you thought, if you would just quit obsessing over them.

A patient needs to take first things first, and should never consider mental disorders as being something shameful. They’re not! And everyone else knows you have them anyway. Like I said, it’s obvious to everyone but you.

You’ve pushed and pushed for the government to classify Morgellons as an emerging physical disease. You’ve pushed the CDC into wasting precious tax money on your nonsense. The CDC knows its nonsense. They know you are delusional, but how is it going to present the truth to you without you going ballistic? What can it do but delay?

Many of you think that your family, friends, and the medical community have abandoned you. But they’ve told you, over and over, where the problem lies. But you’ve refused to listen, and act on their advice, and it’s you that has abandoned them! Some of you have even abandoned your own children.

So, what can the “so-called” Morgellons sufferer do to end this dilemma? A place to start would be to listen to your doctors and follow their advice. And I’m talking about real doctors, not a quack Morgellons doctors! Another good piece of advice is to get rid of your magnifying glasses and microscopes, and quit digging around in your $hit!

Another thing! The Morgellons forums are very harmful to your health, both physical and mental. They encourage you to ignore your doctors, perform harmful alternate medical practices, and remain in denial of the delusions you are having. They also seem to encourage you to distrust almost anyone with a sound mind. To make matters worse, you are making other vulnerable people sick, or sicker, by recruiting them into your screwed up belief system.

It’s not bio-warfare. It’s not nano-technology or GM research. There is no conspiracy. Very few, if any of you, have worms or other parasites. Morgellons, in itself, is nothing!! You are looking at things way too hard… things that you probably shouldn’t be looking at at all. And the shame of it all, is the fact that the quack Morgellons doctors are laughing all the way to the bank.

A quite a while back Smileykins said that the Morgies are “coming out of the closet”. That’s exactly what they’ve been doing. They’ve always been here, but the Morgellons Research Foundation has given them the newer, although false, diagnosis of Morgellons. To the Morgie, this is more palpable, almost heroic, and with the help of Mary Leitao, they’ve been bold enough to show the whold world just how sick they are.

They come forth, screaming the question, “How could thousands of people from all over the world… people that have never met, or spoken to one another, report the same exact symptoms unless Morgellons is a real disease?” The symptoms aren’t exact, but the answer is real simple. It’s because Morgellons has the same symptoms as a particular “real” disorder. That disorder, of course, is Delusions of Parasitosis.

Doctor Harvey thinks that the people diagnosed with DOP actually have Morgellons. He doesn’t realize just how close to the truth he is, but that’s the typically backward thinking of members of the Morgellons/DOP community. Hopefully, when the CDC reports the truth, and the MRF is exposed for what it really is, some of the Morgies will realize they’ve been deceived.

Some of the Morgellons doctors and nurses are probably just as delusional as their patients. They do seem so. But with some of them it is apparent that they are greedy sociopaths, getting rich because of the suffering and desperation of the Morgellons patient.

I strongly believe that this is also the case with the Chronic Lyme Disease doctors. If there is such a thing as Chronic Lyme Disease, it’s nowhere near as widespread as they would have people believe. Personally, I would like to see these charlatans prosecuted.

The honest answer to that is that I’m not on any single “payroll” because I have not been a full time employee at a single company for a couple of years. I’m paid on a contract basis for ongoing work at several businesses and that’s supplemented by non-regular jobs and gigs related to that.

Right now, I’m working mostly for a company that is overhauling their web presence and network. It’s currently mostly PHP stuff with a little bit of network admin. It’s a fairly big job. I also recently did a large gig with a place that was overhauling their offices to save money by ditching a very old T-1 system they had since the 1990’s and replacing it with enterprise DSL.

Are you intoxicated? I mean, just the ranting where you start on one idea and then halfway through the sentence seem to forget what you were even saying and move onto something else.

But anyways, so you say morgellons does involve tiny bugs coming out of your skin? Some people say it just feels like that.

Okay, let me make this easy: If there are little bugs infesting your skin, then they must be a variety of bug. They must have a genus and species. They are either insects or arachnids or something else. Ticks and mites are actually arachnids. They’re easy to tell apart if you put them under a microscope.

Now here’s the simple answer: Identify them, figure out the class and type and then once they’re classified we can have some idea what is going on. The next step is to kill them. There’s no known organism ever discovered that we can’t kill.

There’s one catch: They have to be real for this to work.

The next step is to kill them.

There’s no known organism ever discovered that we can’t kill.

There’s one catch: They have to be real for this to work.

Oh you’ve got me. I’m a paid disinformation agent for big pharma, because god knows, big pharma does NOT want another disease out there. Hell, if the disease were real, they could see treatments for it and make money even. No, they don’t want that.

Yeah, you’ve got me. I’m all those people who you mentioned above. We’re all one in the same. I’m also Batman, Zoro and the Green Lantern… oh, and also I’m the Queen of England.

(oh that was sarcasm, by the way)

Now listen, I’ve delt with more than my fair share of insane little piss ants like yourself and I know a real threat versus a pathetic little wacko by now. You don’t scare me. I know you’re all the way out in California and probably live in the basement of your mom’s house.

Why don’t you go look for me in Santa Monica, the rich guy who looks like Uncle Lurch and has a fat wife Holly. .. I don’t worry that you’ll find me there.

If you and your defective little mind do manage to find me and come by, please by all means swing a lead pipe at me. That is all the justification I need for self defense to beat you into a bloody pulp, which I assure you I will do, and will take great satisfaction in. I have to admit I have my share of frustration in my life and it would be a great release to get the chance to beat a pitiful little wacko like yourself into the ground.

On the bright side for yourself, if you did mange to survive (which I assure you is not a sure thing), you may actually come out better off. You’re clearly so ****ed up in the head that you fall into the category of individuals who are so badly wired that a severe traumatic brain injury can actually result in a net improvement.

Yes, every site that states your pretend disease is just that is obviously paid. The fact that they have hundreds of other unrelated posts must just be cover to make it all seem real, right? The whole world is against you and the real troof.

You’re so pathetic I’m almost thinking maybe I shouldn’t laugh at such an obvious case of mental illness, but I decided to laugh anyway.

If your goal was to prove that Morgellons is NOT a figment of the imagination of a severely diseased mind, you’re not doing it right.

    Lee Workman Says:

I can only state my own experience. Although allergic to poison Ivy, I have never had other outstanding
dermatological issues, just the typical stuff, other than discoloration of the skin on my back (never caused
any problems or sought medical attention for). In 2006, I aquired what looked like a “blood blister” on my
inner-lower thigh. I picked it open to let it bleed out, and instead of scabbing up and healing, it spread into
a dime-size hole in my skin, with a white “mat”. It did not heal. I kept it clean but it continued to itch and burn. The itching caused me to scratch, which in turn caused five symetrical “holes” to appear in the white
mat. Perfectly symmetrical, to the human eye. Eventually, with application of bleach, the thing “sealed over”. It left a “pitted” and discolored (whitish) area under the skin. I thought “great, i’m done with it.”.
Then another one appeared on my other leg. Now, four years, 4 dermatologists, and about 8 lesions later,
I can truly say I have something virulent. The lesions did not start with me “picking”, they started with very
pronounced, acute and localized pain and/or itching, and each one followed the same pattern of growth.
It is really offensive and frustrating to read the comments by these “brains” that this is psychosomatic. I would not wish this affliction on any living being, but if
i had to choose someone to receive it, these “brains” would be first in line, to experience “psychosomatic” symptoms and then
continue to maintain their “poise and sophistication” long enough to deny the pain and horror.
I observed these fibers myself, BEFORE ANY knowledge of Morgellons or its symptoms, and commented about this strange
formation to several people. These fibers are very very small, not at all like hairs, much smaller.
I used a 30x jewelers loupe to observe them. They are usually black or milky white. The cysts
that generate or are generated by the fibers also tend to collect blood in “sequestral cells”.
The largest cyst I have obtained was about the size of a shot-gun pellet, but most require magnification to see.
The sores tend to excrete a very “slick” feeling substance that seems to be the origin of the milky-white “nodules”. The nodules themselves resemble mutant jellyfish: tendrils that go down, and globs/clusters
    of the milky-white/translucent tissue.
The sores appear at random locations, but seem to favor lower body, large-muscle areas such as thighs and buttocks, but I’ve had instances in my outer-ear (cartilage-tissue), one on my hand, calf, and groin.
