Is this page slow for anyone else?

August 2nd, 2008

Share

Maybe it’s just me or maybe it’s not, but for some reason this page has been taking up an obscene amount of CPU power and ram recently.   Am I the only one experiencing this?  Perhaps it’s that comment scroller which I thought I had finally gotten working like I had hoped.   Or it might be the way I have my own browser set up, but either way if I’m not the only one let me know.   Perhaps it needs a couple of tweaks.   I just updated by copy of Firefox so it could be that one of the plugins isn’t playing nicely.

Works fine for me, and the comment scroller works. I am using Firefox and Vista and I live in Orange County, California. Have you tried rebooting? For me Vista will for no apparent reason stop communicating on my local network, and rebooting is the only solution.

The comment scroler thingie is maxing out my processor too. I’m running WinXP SP2 browsing with FireFox 3.0.1 with updated java and flash

I withdraw my remark. I am running a dual processor, and when I see the comment scroller, Firefox uses 50% of the CPU time. In other words, it uses all the processing time of one of my two processors. This is way more than it should. I am using an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ at 2.3 GHz.

There is something wrong with that script. I’ve had the hit total on this page drop dramatically in the past couple of weeks and I think that might be the reason: people are having their system choke on it. Hence, i’ve taken it down. I found a much more effecient script elsewhere but unfortunately it’s payware and so I guess I’ll bite the bullet and pay out the 35 bucks to get that and hopefully have it up tomorrow.

Ug. I just realized that the alignment of the sidebar and the top search thingy is slightly off in internet explorer. Looks like more work for tomorrow!

It tends to load slow for me. I generally have to wait 10 – 15 seconds for the page to load.

The page never gave me any problems, at any time. I’m on a DSL line.

No actually this morning is loaded quite nicely. I did see a surge of CPU activity but nothing like last night where one of the cores went red and the other maxed out at about 90% processing. This morning there was probably a 1 – 1.5 second surge of 70 – 80% activity when it loaded. And it loaded snappily too.

Wow that is pretty slow. It pops right up for me. TomT, what browser are you using?
I am still on Firefox 2 on this machine. I have Firefox 3 on my other machine. I’ll try it on that and see what happens.

I loaded your page on my computer that has Firefox 3 and it did seem a little slower than my Firefox 2 computer. It took about 5 seconds on my Firefox 3 computer which is slower but not by a lot. The Firefox 2 computer is also my more powerful computer so I don’t know that this test is very conclusive.
Your page isn’t very graphic or animation intensive so CPU speed may not be much of an issue anyway.

using exploder 7 at work your page typically takes several minutes to load. The first story or two will load and I will be done reading them before the rest of the page or the sidebar has loaded.

Same here. I noticed the page mainly hangs with the message “Waiting for http://digg.com/tools/…..
10-20 Seconds for each of the stories on a page. The more stories are on a page, the more often it hangs at “Waiting for digg..”, like for Godot :-)

I’ll mention this here since this is a website entry even though is off topic.

Doc, have you ever considered a FAQ for the site. We do seem to have to answer the same questions over and over again?

Same here. I sometimes go off to read something else and forget to come back!
