Elmer Fudd Teaches The Basics of Free Enterprise

The sad thing is that a kid could learn more about economics, commerce, entrepreneurship and the realities of business from this 1956 Loony Toons short “Yankee Dood It” than they learn in the educational system.   Unfortunately, these topics are generally not taught anymore – or at least it was not on the curriculum when I was in school, which was not that long ago.   Luckily, I had some teachers who explained it anyway.

But for those who didn’t, here’s Elmer Fudd’s explanation:

Basic economics is now a mandatory course in high school up here, although exactly what is being taught in those classes is unclear to me. What is unacceptable is that people that have studied this topic for years at a university, who we trusted to keep the system running, dropped the ball. I cannot believe that the events of this month were a complete surprise, or that years ago it wasn’t clear to them the magnitude of the risk they were putting the global economic system in with their actions. This is not a case where there were a small number of incompetent individuals left in control of something beyond their understanding. There were droves of quants, analysts, experienced financial operatives that are now claiming that they were just as shocked as we were. Horsedung.

What I want to see is an investigation into the private finances and market activity of all of these people, to see just how many bailed out months ago and left the rest of us holding the bag.

I’m sorry, I just can’t get over the fact that he says “Wubbleyou”.
I won’t be able to accomplish anything for the rest of the week because of this word. Thanks a lot!

This was one of the cartoons sponsored by the Sloane Foundation.

I’ve never seen this particular one, but I’ve seen both the others – “By Word Of Mouse” (1954 – promotes mass production) and “Heir Conditioned” (1955 – promotes investment of wealth)

Right. I knew that the .com bubble burst was coming in 1995. We used to talk about “what we were going to do when this craziness ends.”

I knew the housing bubble was going to burst at some point starting around 2003. I would warn people not to go too long on housing, that prices would NOT go up forever, and that the profits they were making “flipping” houses were less than they would have made if they had just bought one house in early days and hung on to it.

This is not difficult prognostication. You can’t predict when it will happen, but it becomes clear that it will happen at some point.

That said, a lot of our leaders have never in their lives had to run a company, make payroll, pay business taxes, etc. They live in a different world. They probably don’t know how to conserver water and pay attention to direction while hiking in the desert, either.

And so the pleasant little village was replaced by a factory, a highway, congestion, and noise. Yay.
