As a followup from the previous post on the fraudulent bomb detector, here’s a video from CBS news featuring one an interview with a Pentagon security expert on….. hey wait a second, I know that guy. That’s Hal Bidlack. Go Hal! (Hal is a friend of this site and MC’s the annual Amazing Meeting for the JREF, among other things)

“…shuffle their feet to generate static electricity” I mean good God people, didn’t this sound a bit suspicious.

I could see a relatively uneducated Iraqi soldier falling for that, especially if it were taught by someone in authority and everyone else seemed to accept it. There’s that whole emperor has no clothes thing that comes into play where people won’t listen to their own common sense.
I don’t see how the higher ups didn’t see something here though. It sounds very much like Hal and whoever else came across this was trying to raise the alarm very early on that this was a scam and nobody listened. I don’t get it. How on earth it can take months to clamp down on something so obvious.
My other thought is that if this device managed to get by for this long, just imagine if someone actually went to the trouble to make a device that did take batteries and had indicator lights and such – a device that actually looked like it could be a plausible bomb detector

Wow. It’s amazing the kind of scams people manage to pass off. This is almost as dumb as homeopathy

Jeez. Those guys are shuffeling their feet up and down in place, they look like they really have to go to the bathroom or something. Iraq bought 85 million dollars worth of these? Ouch! Now that sure adds insult to injury!
I know that the US is pulling out of Iraq to some degree, but the US military knows its useless and since they’re still a big presence in Iraq and aiding in the security training, don’t they have an ambassador or something that can let the Iraqis know this is garbage? Ditto for the British. Why has this taken so long?
I am just thankful that people like Lt Col Bidlack are around to help stop this. At lest there are some who try to do something. I think that the side of those skeptical of offers like this needs to always be taken very seriously. This should just not have been allowed to happen.

When you say “our friend” or something on the website, do you mean it’s someone who is just fighting the good fight, or someone you actually know and are friendly with?
