Sorry if this post is short but right now on the Sundance Television Channel, which you may or may not get, the documentary Burning the Future is on… or coming on.
It is now 9:32 PM on the East Coast of the USA and it’s coming on at 9:35. Sorry I forgot to mention this earlier! EEK! I gotta go watch it! (And record it too!)
It’s likely it’ll be on at another time as well. I don’t have time to check though. I gots to go get to the television.
UPDATE: If you get the Sundance Channel, you can still see this excellent documentary on May 16 or May 18. Information here.

“EEK! I gotta go watch it!”
You know, a laptop with a wireless connection would allow you to blog whilst watching the TV.
You’re not electrosensitive, are you?

A combination of things actually.
In order of the burden on my time, from least to most:
- Family obligations
- Work
- I’m in the market for a new car and I’ve been looking and also getting the finances arranged
- I’ve been spending some time with a lady friend recently. Actually in increasing amounts as a function of recent days passed. We’ll see where that goes, but you know how that is…

Oh there’s a girl in your life now? Well I guess that probably means you’re having a lot of sex with her with no concern for whether or not it’s right and who you or her have been with, right? Do you think you might marry her? What if you get her pregnant? Oh I forgot, you can always have an abortion. It must be pretty uninteresting when your relationships are all just about sex and a piece of meat you can do stuff with and try to be as perverse as possible to chase your highs.
I just don’t know what it’s like when you’re like that because I’m not an atheist. For me, I think Christian relationships and the hope that it might become something bigger and knowing it’s part of a bigger thing. I think it would become boring to just engage in activities of the flesh.
have you ever thought that a more godly way of living might actually be better? I mean not only for the Lord but for yourself, just because he gave us the laws to live a better life?

Okay. Honestly, that has got to be one of the most offensive and personal things I’ve ever had posted on here and so I’m addressing it now despite the fact that I’m about to go out.
Yes, I am an atheist. She, also happens to not be affiliated with any religion. She’s not as much a member of the skeptic movement as myself, but also she is a non-believer.
No, I’m not interested in her or any other woman for just sex. Actually it’s not even a major thing I’ve been concerned with right now. And the answer to the obvious question: No, we have not.
That’s not what anything has been about since I was maybe 19, at the latest.
Secondly, I don’t know much about her past (nor do I really care to), but I don’t have the impression she’s ‘easy’ or all about that kind of thing either. Nor would I want her to be! I’m not really looking for anyone into that on the first or second date and it’s not the primary motivation in seeing someone. For that matter, I would not want it to become one and certainly not now.
Would I marry her? I don’t know. It’s possible. Not now. Not next month, but I mean if things turn out especially well then sure, the potential is there for anyone I’d see. I don’t have plans of that, but that’s a real distant thing anyway. In all probability I’d say it probably won’t culminate in that. But who knows?
And I don’t think there is any worry of getting anyone pregnant any time soon.
Where the hell do you get off with that kind of thing? Why would it be your business anyway?
Do you really think anyone who doesn’t pray to the invisible man in the sky is just obsessed with earthly hedonism and trying to do everything perverse or ’sinful’ just because?

My goodness Keith, put a sock in it!
How offensive do you want to get here? Go accuse Steve of everything in the book and then tell him how wicked it is?
Look, keep your opinions to yourself about what Steve does with his personal life, and we’ll keep our opinions to ourselves about you.

I don’t mind hearing your opinion of someone who is part of an atheist, anti-Chistian, anti-god, left-wing website which exists to tell everyone else how wrong they are and how important it is that they are not Christian and do not give the Lord the servitude and glory he is due. Say what you want.
It is my business because I exist to serve Him and every sinful act on the earth is something I must not turn my back on for this is why I am. I am to serve him by preaching the good news and showing people for who they are.
If someone wants to have all kinds of orgies and do things like homosexuality and fornication then why are they so ashamed that they will not talk about it openly? Are his sinful acts to shameful to stand by? It does not matter if you want to keep it from everyone else because the Lord still knows all and you will be judged for defaming his name by abominations of the flesh!

Good movie though. On a totally different note I almost had to laugh out loud when today McCain was getting flak for supporting nuclear power, and someone brought up the Hanford Site as evidence that nuclear is a bad idea, ugh! The anti-nuclear people are so thick they don’t even understand the difference between the Manhattan project and nuclear power…

Personally, i believe in God. And as such it sounds to me that you’re serving Satan with your half-truths and outright lies and expressing your divisive behaviour where it is not warranted.
First of all, it is none of your business what people do in their own time so as long as it doesn’t affect the liberties of another individual. God gave us free will to decide these things for ourselves – not to have idiots like you to take those decisions for us. Secondly, homosexuality and fornication is only a shameful act in a BACKWARD culture. Seems to me that your mind has been polluted by misleading preachers and a deliberately inaccurate and mis-translated bible.

Keith, do you honestly think non-Christians are all the kind who just go around having sex with whoever just for the hell of it and doing every kind of perverse action in the book just because they know god doesn’t want them to?
That’s certainly not true of me. For example, I would never ever even consider having sex with someone like you. It wouldn’t matter what you looked like or even if I were desperate, because I have more self respect than to bed a moron like yourself.
It’s amazing how obsessed people like you are with all the kinds of things going on in other people’s lives and lavishly imagining orgies and S&M and stuff. Maybe it’s a fantasy or just desperation to justify your lack of any relationships? Perhaps you are so universally rejected that you pretend it’s your choice. I don’t know, but something screw is going on in your head.

Ignoring for the moment the offensiveness, inappropriatness and idiocy of the rest of Keith’s posts, I’m just amazed that ANYONE who regularly reads Doc’s articles could come away with the impression that he’s a leftist. Now I don’t know what his actual political affiliations are precisely, but I think it’s unlikely that he would be, for instance, a communist, or a European-style social-democrat.
Actually, wasn’t there a commenter on the thread about the Christian teacher accused of torturing his students who alleged that anyone who didn’t follow Jesus was a left-winger? I wonder what these people would make of objectivism?

Yeah I’ve been thinking about that. Maybe this weekend we’ll see if it could be worth a shot. Okay, well it looks like my reception has not been so great.
Am I a troll? Call me what you want, but this is honestly what I believe and I think it’s fair to put someone out for their immorality and bad behavior which it sounds like all you approve of. I don’t approve of it because the Lord has told me not to and to maintain his laws on this earth and for that reason I think that the author needs to be shamed for what he has done against God and against the commandments and the Bible.
I don’t direct this just at the author. I want to know from all of you. If you are willing to do shameful and disgusting things behind closed doors, why are you so afraid to admit them? Why do you turn away and not stand behind your actions? Is it because you know they are wrong? I will tell you what I do because I do nothing disreputable and perverted. I’m not married and I remain pure. I have no shame in admitting this.
Why then, will you not stand with pride behind it, if it is right? Do you not think you will have to stand behind the Lord one day and account for your sins of the flesh? The judgment of man is not what you need to worry about, because His judgment is what is matters.
Also, if you have engaged in homosexuality or orgies or multiple parters, perverse fornication, sodomy, lust and other sins, then you are not barred from salvation. You must change and accept your failings for them to be forgiven. Do so now, for you never know when your life may end and if it does while you do not accept the Lord and his laws and words, you will not be saved from eternal torture and misery.
You have done many shameful things, but rejoice because this is your chance to wash them away and be reborn as a new and pure being!

Whilst we’re on that topic, I’m ashamed to admit – i did the stinkiest sh-t the other day – had to leave the window open for hours afterwards. It was really disgusting – there was much volume of material in various consistencies, and required multiple flushes.

Frank, I feel your description of this incident to be insufficiently detailed. In fact, it really raises more questions than it answers.
But putting all that to one side for the moment, I now recognise that it’s quite clear that the stinkiness of aformentioned sh-t is undoubtably due to your being insufficiently Godly. It’s the demonic content of the large intestine and upper colon which produce this phenomenon, as Vatican researchers have known for centuries. Of course, the further advanced one is in Christianity, the greater the abatement of said stinkiness, and for the really, really pure, why there’s no discernable stench at all! Just ask Keith.

I would give it 4-4.5 out of 5 stars. I’ve seen better – but not many. Not many at all. There are a few things I might have changed a bit if it were up to me. For one thing, I would have added more focus to the fact that what they were talking about in West Virginia was not limited to a few communities but also mention it was all over America – Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, Utah, Kentucky and so on and also in Russia, China, Germany, Poland, Australia, India etc etc. Few countries are downsizing their coal mining. Canada is hoping to shortly, if they can get a couple more reactors going. The only other country is France, which closed their last coal mine in 2004.
I might have focused more broadly on the global consequences too. Both these issues are there, but not as much focus as I would have had to show that the community they showed was not atypical. They also implied that traditional mining is better than mountain top mining, which it is. But it’s also pretty crappy.
Overall, however, it packed a lot of dramatic and informative content into a film that was a good length and had pretty good flow. Any criticism I have of it is, at most a nitpick. I’d recommend it.
Anyone who watches it should see the dramatic scope of the problem and then also bare in mind how enormous the geographic scale of it is and the number of communities and areas which are forever changed. It is sobering.
