We’ve all laughed at those 1950’s educational videos which are, in hindsight, totally out of touch, full of overly-conservative stereotypes, cold-war era social engineering and that sort of thing. But this video is a rare gem. In this case, the basic message is more relevant today then ever and such voices of reason are all too few and far between. The video addresses quackery and shows a case of how the more things change, the more they stay the same.
It makes me wonder if we may have even taken a step backward in this area. In the name of freedom and acceptance we’ve become less willing to take on those who put out inaccurate and dangerous information, even in areas as important as health and medicine. The agencies which (at least in this film) work hard to protect consumers could do well to renew their efforts in this day and age.
Granted, this film has the typical 1950’s sexist undertones, “Leave it to Beaver” style clean-cut kids, confident voice of authority and all the other cultural influences you’d expect. But look past the somewhat dated social setting and the message is very much worth listening to.
